# What are Decimals?

The process of expressing or representing the number that is whole and fraction at the same time can be defined as decimals. The decimals can also be defined as the number that lies between the integers on a number line. We can segregate a whole number from a fraction by using a ‘.’ which is also known as a decimal point. Let us assume, you went to a shopping mall to buy shoes. The shoes cost around 5 \$ and 50 cents. This can be represented in decimals as 5.5

## Conversion of Decimals to Fractions

Fractions can be defined as part of a whole. For example, you ate a slice of pizza where the total number of slices was 4. Therefore, the fraction of pizza you ate is equivalent to ¼. The following are the steps for converting a decimal into a fraction:

1.  The first step is to identify or recognize the place value of the mentioned digits which is present after the decimal point.
2. If you know the place value, use it to identify the denominator of the given number.
3. The third step is to remove the point ( decimal ) and then write the fraction.
4. After writing the decimal into a fraction, check whether the fraction can be simplified into lower terms.

## Different Types of Decimals

As mentioned above, the process of expressing or representing the number that is whole and fraction at the same time can be defined as decimals. The following are the types of decimals:

1. Terminating decimals are the decimals that do not reoccur. For example, 30.2, 3.4, 27.2, and so on.
2. The opposite of terminating decimals is the non-terminating decimals. It can be defined as the decimals which do reoccur. For example, 54543. 35……, 3.14……. Etc.
3. Recurring decimals are the type of decimal that always repeat after an interval. For example, 573.666… etc.
4.  Non – Recurring decimals are the type of decimals that does not repeat after an interval. For example, 743. 67346…. Etc.

Example 1: Convert the decimal of 0.3 into a fraction.

Ans: The given decimal = 0.3,

The place value of the decimal is = tenth place.

0.3 = 3/10

Therefore the conversion of 0.3 into a fraction is equivalent to = 3/10.

Example 2: Convert the decimal of 0.5 into a fraction.

Ans: The given decimal = 0.5,

The place value of the decimal is = tenth place.

0.5 = 5/10

When simplified, 5/10 = ½.

Therefore, the conversion of 0.5 into a fraction is equivalent to = ½.
